All interior-use coatings are U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) compliant. Formulations are available that are epoxy-free, as well as BADGE-compliant and NOGE free for European can makers.
For three-piece steel food can bodies, epoxy-phenolic and organosol interior coatings are available in clear, gold, zinc oxide and aluminized. Also available is a new white coating with excellent chemical and stain resistance. Side-stripe coatings afford superior protection and coverage of the seam, and work in concert with the interior body coating.
For two-piece steel cans, aluminized, gold and zinc side interior coatings are available in epoxy-phenolic for shallow-draw and organosols and polyesters for deep-draw.
For two-piece drawn-wall-ironed cans, PPG also offers a choice of water- or solvent-based internal coatings in gold, white or aluminized gray.

Exterior base coats and varnishes complete the food packaging coatings line, and are designed for process compatibility with PPG's interior food can body coatings. Base coats for two-piece cans are available in clear and gold-tone.
For the European market, PPG supplies exterior decorative inks. New two-coat systems comprising the white base coat and inks for tin-free steel can bodies eliminate the need for the clear over varnish, simplifying processing and reducing costs while achieving the level of protection and aesthetics of three-coat systems. Side-stripe coatings for interior and exterior application are especially resilient.
